Μέσα από προσωπικές εμπειρίες και αλληλεπιδράσεις, ο δημιουργός βιώνει την καθημερινότητά του στην Ελλάδα. Ο τίτλος “Receta” λειτουργεί ως ένα πολυδιάστατο εργαλείο που μεταφράζει με συμβολικό τρόπο καταστάσεις της καθημερινότητας.
Η ταινία μέσα από το παραβολικό της πλαίσιο εισάγει τους θεατές στην κοινωνική πραγματικότητα. Παρομοιάζει τη ζωή με μια «συνταγή» που χρησιμοποιείται για να αντιμετωπιστούν θέματα όπως η ομοφοβία, η μετανάστευση, η ευπάθεια, ο εκφοβισμός, η κυβερνητική βία, η οικονομική ύφεση και η κατάθλιψη.
Η RECETA αποτελεί μια διασταύρωση ταινίας ντοκιμαντέρ και πρωτοποριακής παράστασης με ειλικρινή, συγχρονισμένο ηχητικό υλικό της αλληλεπίδρασης μεταξύ του σκηνοθέτη και των κινηματογραφημένων θεμάτων. Ενώ στο παρασκήνιο είναι διάχυτη η προσωπική - υποκειμενική ερμηνεία των νοημάτων που διαπραγματεύεται ο σκηνοθέτης, στο προσκήνιο ο θεατής εξοικειώνεται με τις ιστορίες του δημιουργού και τις διαφορετικές «οικογένειες» του. Κατά τη διάρκεια του έργου γνωρίζουμε τη «φυσική» οικογένεια του που εκπροσωπεί το σώμα, την «πνευματική» οικογένεια του που εκπροσωπεί την ψυχή, και τη «βιωματική» οικογένειά του που εκπροσωπεί το μυαλό. Ολες έχουν μία «συνταγή» να προτείνουν, αλλά ο πρωταγωνιστής καλείται να δημιουργήσει τη δική του ως μέσο για την επιβίωσή του.
Για τον σκηνοθέτη:
Το 2001, ο Μιχάλης Μαντάς ξεκίνησε να ασχολείται με την δημιουργία προσωρινών αυτόνομων ζωνών στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο (T.A.Z. Hakim Bey 1985). Το πρώτο project πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Hampstead στο Βόρειο Λονδίνο, το δεύτερο στο Leytonstone, στο Ανατολικό Λονδίνο. Η συμμετοχή του σε αυτά τα project περιελάμβανε τον ρόλο του resident artistic director με ακραίο πειραματισμό πάνω σε ζωντανά κομμάτια τέχνης. Μέσα σε αυτά τα δύο χρόνια, με αφορμή τα συγκεκριμένα καλλιτεχνικά έργα, ο Μαντάς διαμόρφωσε μια αισθητική τόσο στο μοντάζ βίντεο / θεάτρου όσο και στο μοντάζ μουσικής. Στο τελικό έργο, οι μπαρόκ μηχανορραφίες των δημιουργιών του Μάντα συγκρατήθηκαν από ένα καθοριστικό στοιχείο, μια διακριτική και ειλικρινή υποκειμενικότητα. Στο RECETA συνεχίζει με το στιλ αυτού που ονομάζουμε «προσωπικό ντοκιμαντέρ», δηλαδή μια ταινία ντοκιμαντέρ μαζί με μια πρωτοποριακή παράσταση δεμένες σε ένα εννοιολογικό πλαίσιο αυτο-αντανακλαστικότητας. Η προκλητική μορφή του κινηματογραφικού έργου μέσα από την αντανάκλαση μιας φωτογραφικής μηχανής, «ταξιδεύει» πέρα από τις κοινότητες «πολιτιστικής αντίστασης» της σύγχρονης Ελλάδας ως σημαντική συμβολή στην εξελισσόμενη οριοθετημένη ζώνη μεταξύ μιας ταινίας ντοκιμαντέρ και της πρωτοπορίας. Με το RECETA (2017) ο σκηνοθέτης συνεχίζει το εύρος της έρευνάς του μέσα από την χαρτογράφηση του σύγχρονου ελληνικού πολιτισμού στην μετά κρίσης εποχή. Γυρίστηκε σε Αθήνα, Λονδίνο, Οντάριο, Καναδά, τοποθετώντας το καλλιτεχνικό περιεχόμενο της ταινίας σε μια ιστορική, πολιτική και κοινωνική ανάλυση.

Receta is the Greek word for Recipe, which means "take" (Latin).
A recipe is a set of instructions that describes how to prepare or make something, especially a culinary dish. It is also used in medicine or in information technology (user acceptance). A doctor will usually begin a prescription with recipe, Latin for take, usually abbreviated to Rx or an equivalent symbol. – Wikipedia
At the center of Michael Mantas’ "take" on the contemporary international avant-garde is the iconic figure of Mina Orfanou the Greek transgender icon notable for her role in Strella.
"Receta" presents Mina as Eurynome, the Goddess of the hieros gamos.
Michael Mantas' "Receta" encapsulates a decade long journey as a monastic, scholar and filmmaker. A new transgender identity through the magical blending of the mystical, academic and fervently charged political and economic environment in his ancestral Greece is woven into the recipe for homemade cheese. By way of this visually tactile process of bleeding the milk through a nippled fabric is a fully integrated exploration of the Dasein or Being of the 360 perspective.
Receta affirms that a new holism has arrived into the aesthetics of art via a trans-mutation of gender idenfication into a marriage of opposites. In establishing a language for a new holistic marriage of subjective/objective, as well as documentary and drama, RECETA surpasses all previous categories of film. This is the gift that Mantas urges the avant-garde to "take" as recipe for a new global transgender dialetic via a new film vocabulary. The merging of image and text expands the terrain of realism to literally embody the surreal.
RECETA will provide an engagement for the intersection of documentary film and avant-garde performance by candid, sync-sound footage of the interaction between the filmmaker and subjects filmed. I will seek out communities in which I have cultivated friendships in the past (U.K. and Greece squat scene) and those which I am yet to encounter as ‘culture objects’. My aim is to perform myself freely in the collective consciousness and mythology of these communities as my alter personal militant Bohemian, in order to investigate the canvas within from which actions of cultural resistance springs forth.
Bio:
In 2001, Michael Mantas became involved in a project to create a temporary autonomous zone in the U.K. (T.A.Z. Hakim Bey 1985). The first in Hampstead North London, the second in Leytonstone, East London. His input in the TAZ projects evolved into resident artistic director on highly experimental ‘living art’ pieces. Throughout the two years, it transpired, an aesthetic was taking shape and in the video/theatre and music montage shot for and around these projects. In the final work, the baroque machinations of Mr. Mantas’ creations were held together by a defining element, that is, an incisive and frank subjectivity. RECETA continues in the style of what has come to be called ‘personal documentary’, i.e., documentary film and avant- garde performance together within a conceptual framework of self-reflexivity. This provocational form of cinema-verite film work and a self-reflexive camera eye, ’travelling’ through the communities of ‘cultural resistance’ of contemporary Greece as meaningful contribution to the evolving liminal zone between documentary film and the avant-garde. RECETA (2017) is where the filmmaker continue to map the scope of his documentary research about contemporary Greek culture in the post-crisis milieu. Shot in Athens, London, Ontario, Canada, he situates the artistic content of the film in both a historical, political and social analysis.
