Μετά την ατομική έκθεση “Monster” και την περφόρμανς “New Flags for a New Country / Destroying Elvis" στη Στέγη, αλλά και το "Black Frames" σε ανάθεση του Onassis Foundation USA, ο Γιάννης Βαρελάς συνεργάζεται ξανά με το Ίδρυμα Ωνάση για να παρουσιάσει μια αινιγματική και ιδιαίτερα προσωπική έκθεση ζωγραφικής στο The Benaki Museum - Πειραιώς 138. Στη νέα σειρά έργων του Γιάννης Βαρελάς / Jannis Varelas: Anima Ι, ο διεθνής εικαστικός φωτογραφίζει φίλους και γείτονές του στο ιδιαίτερα διαμορφωμένο περιβάλλον του εργαστηρίου του για να μεταφέρει στη συνέχεια την εικόνα τους στον καμβά και να θέσει μια σειρά ερωτήματα για τις έννοιες της ταυτότητας και της ετερότητας, της ομοιότητας και της διαφοράς, της κανονικότητας και της μη κανονικότητας, του διμερούς και του πολλαπλού φύλου. After his solo exhibition “Monster” and the performance "New Flags for a New Country / Destroying Elvis" at the Onassis Stegi, as well as the Onassis Foundation USA commission "Black Frames”, Jannis Varelas collaborates once again with the Onassis Foundation to present an enigmatic and notably personal painting exhibition at the Benaki Museum - Peiraios 138. In his new series of paintings, the world renowned artist photographs friends and neighbors in the specially laid out setting of his studio and then transfers the photographic renderings onto the canvas, transforming and diffracting them by the language of painting, posing questions on the concepts of identity and alterity, sameness and difference, the normal and the abnormal, the binary and the multiple gender.
