Τη Δευτέρα 30 Νοεμβρίου στις 20.30 το Κέντρο Πολιτισμού Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος παρουσιάζει στην Αίθουσα Σταύρος Νιάρχος τους μουσικούς της Καμεράτα - Ορχήστρας των Φίλων της Μουσικής σε μια μοναδική συναυλία σε διεύθυνση του διακεκριμένου τσεμπαλίστα και μαέστρου Μάρκελλου Χρυσικόπουλου.
Στο πρώτο μέρος, θα παρουσιαστεί το έργο Cantus in Μemoriam Benjamin Britten του σύγχρονου Eσθονού δημιουργού Arvo Pärt (γενν. 1935) που είναι αφιερωμένο στη μνήμη του σπουδαίου Βρετανού συνθέτη Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). Το έργο γράφτηκε το 1977 ως μια ελεγεία για τον θάνατο του μεγάλου μουσουργού τον οποίο ο Pärt θαύμαζε. Πρόκειται για το δημοφιλέστερο έργο του Pärt που, λόγω του υποβλητικού κινηματογραφικού του χαρακτήρα, έχει χρησιμοποιηθεί επανειλημμένα ως μουσική επένδυση σε ταινίες και ντοκιμαντέρ.
Το πρόγραμμα της συναυλίας συνεχίζεται με ένα από τα πιο συγκλονιστικά συμφωνικά έργα του 20ού αιώνα, τη συγκινητική Συμφωνία αρ. 14, (έργο 135) του Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Σολίστ η σοπράνο Τζούλια Σουγλάκου και ο μπάσος Πέτρος Μαγουλάς που ερμηνεύουν έντεκα ποιήματα τεσσάρων σπουδαίων ποιητών: Federico García Lorca, Guillaume Apollinaire, Wilhelm Ludwig von Küchelbecker και Rainer Maria Rilke. Τα ποιήματα τους, που πραγματεύονται τον θάνατο, ενέπνευσαν τον συνθέτη. Η συμφωνία είναι αφιερωμένη και αυτή στον Benjamin Britten, ο οποίος ήταν διευθυντής ορχήστρας στην πρεμιέρα του έργου στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο το 1970.
Η Συμφωνία αρ.14 (έργο 135) είναι ένα έργο ενάντια στον θάνατο, ένας ύμνος στη ζωή και τη χαρά και, αναμφίβολα, ένα από τα πιο πρωτότυπα έργα που έχει γράψει ο μεγαλύτερος από τους σοβιετικούς νεοκλασικιστές. Γράφτηκε την άνοιξη του 1969, περίοδο κατά την οποία ο Shostakovich νοσηλευόταν σε νοσοκομείο της Μόσχας. Φέρει τον τίτλο “συμφωνία”, και είναι όντως ένα συμφωνικό έργο, ωστόσο δεν ακολουθεί την αποκρυσταλλωμένη δομή της κλασικής συμφωνίας, αλλά παραθέτει ένα κύκλο από μελοποιημένους στίχους. Ο συνθέτης χτίζει το κολοσσιαίο αυτό οικοδόμημα με μελωδικά μοντέλα τα οποία αγγίζουν τις αισθητικές και τεχνοτροπικές αρχές του δωδεκαφθογγισμού (τεχνική απαγορευμένη από το σοβιετικό καθεστώς και από τον ίδιο τον Στάλιν). Με αυτήν τη «συμφωνία», ο διαισθανόμενος το επερχόμενο τέλος της ζωής του Shostakovich, βρίσκει το κουράγιο να ορθώσει το ανάστημά του απέναντι στο καθεστώς, περνώντας το μήνυμα ότι τίποτα δεν μπορεί να εμποδίσει ένα καλλιτέχνη να υμνήσει τη χαρά της ζωής και την απέχθεια προς τον θάνατο.
Ο Μάρκελλος Χρυσικόπουλος ξεκίνησε μελετώντας τσέμπαλο στην σχολή Βινιανέλλι Αθηνών, απ’ όπου πήρε το δίπλωμά του με άριστα παμψηφεί, πρώτο βραβείο και το αριστείο της σχολής. Στη συνέχεια, μαθήτευσε στο Παρίσι, στο Μοzarteum του Σάλτσμπουργκ και στο Conservatoire της Γενεύης. Έχει διευθύνει τη Venice Baroque Orchestra, την Καμεράτα, την Κρατική Ορχήστρα Αθηνών, την Irish Baroque Orchestra και το Βach Consort Wien. Συνεργάζεται τακτικά με την Κammeroper στη Βιέννη, ενώ έχει επίσης εμφανιστεί στο Φεστιβάλ Bayreuth. Έχει λάβει τη διεθνή διάκριση Choc Musique, την οποία απέσπασε ως διευθυντής στη Venice Baroque Orchestra για έναν διπλό δίσκο με θέμα την Ολυμπιάδα. Έχει, ακόμη, συμμετάσχει ως βοηθός μαέστρου σε πολλές βραβευμένες ηχογραφήσεις για τις εταιρείες MDG, SONY και DECCA.

On Monday, November 30, at 20:30, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultiural Center (SNFCC) presents, at the Stavros Niarchos Hall, the musicians of the Camerata – The Friends of Music Orchestra in a exclusive concert conducted by the renowned harpsichord player and maestro Markellos Chryssicos.
The first part will present Cantus in Μemoriam Benjamin Britten by the contemporary Esthonian creator Arvo Pärt (born 1935), which is dedicated to the memory of the great British composer Benjamin Britten (1913-1976). The piece was written in 1977 as an elegy to mourn the death of the great composer, whom Pärt admired. It is Pärt’s most popular piece, and has been used repeatedly in the soundtrack of movies and documentaries, on account of its evocative cinematic tone.
The concert program continues with one the most emotive symphonic works of the 20th century, the soul-stirring Symphony No. 14 (op. 135) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Soprano Julia Souglakou and bass Petros Magoulas as soloists perform eleven poems by four great poets: Federico García Lorca, Guillaume Apollinaire, Wilhelm Ludwig von Küchelbecker and Rainer Maria Rilke. Their poems, all dealing with death, inspired the composer. This symphony, too, is dedicated to Benjamin Britten, who conducted the orchestra in its premiere in the United Kingdom in 1970.
Symphony No. 14 (op. 135) is a piece against death, a hymn to life and joy and, without a doubt, one of the most original works written by the greatest of the Soviet neo-classicists. It was written in the spring of 1969, at a time when Shostakovich was in hospital in Moscow. It bears the title “symphony” and is indeed a symphonic work, without, however, following the crystalized structure of a classical symphony, but citing, instead, a series of verses set to music. The composer built this colossal structure with melodic models closely reminiscent of the aesthetic and stylistic principles of the twelve-tone technique (which was forbidden by the Soviet regime and by Stalin himself). Through this “symphony”, Shostakovich, sensing the imminent end of his life, finds the courage to stand up against the regime, sending out the message that nothing can stop an artist from singing of the joy of life and the aversion to death.
Markellos Chryssicos began by studying the harpsichord with Margarita Dalmati at the Vignanelli School of Athens, graduating with distinction, and receiving first prize and the school’s commendation. He went on to study in Paris, at the Μοzarteum in Salzburg, and at the Geneva Conservatoire. He has conducted the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the Camerata, the Athens State Orchestra, the Irish Baroque Orchestra and the Βach Consort Wien. He collaborates regularly with the Κammeroper in Vienna, and has also appeared in the Bayreuth Festival. He has been awarded the international distinction Choc Musique, which he won as director at the Venice Baroque Orchestra for a double album on the Olympiad. As assistant conductor, he has also contributed to several award-winning recordings for MDG, SONY and DECCA.
