Phoenix Athens presents a solo exhibition of Leandros Pigades (Lee Wells). The multi-media artist, based in New York and Athens invites the viewer to embark on a detournement of time and space. An experiment in situational awareness and cultural appropriation. the exhibition explores the relationship between the universality of myth and aestetic-terrorism.
The artist weaves a cinematic narrative encouraging the viewer to question their perceptions by exploiting the gentrifying anarchist hotbed of Exarchia and using it as a platform for dialogue into the`post-crisis” era.
An advocate of the avant garde post-humorist art movement, Pigades practice, inherently derivative, insists that it is not unique but continues the tradition of appropriation which juxtaposes new and old ways of art making as a projection on the future.
“Imagine the amazing good fortune of the generation that gets to see the end of the world. This is as marvelous as being there in the beginning.” - Jean Baudrillard

Leandros Pigates (°1971, New York) creates mixed media artworks, paintings and media art. He has presented his work internationally for more than 25 years at numerous institutions, universities, art fairs and galleries. His work urges us to renegotiate art as being part of a reactive or – at times – autistic medium, commenting on oppressing themes in our contemporary society. By creating situations and breaking the passivity of the spectator, he wants the viewer to become part of the art as a kind of added component. Art is entertainment: to be able to touch the work, as well as to interact with the work is important.
He creates situations in which everyday objects are altered or detached from their natural function. By applying specific combinations and certain manipulations, different functions and/or contexts are created. By rejecting an objective truth and global cultural narratives, his works references post-colonial theory as well as the avant-garde or the post-modern as a form of resistance against the logic of the capitalist market system.
His works are based on inspiring situations: visions that reflect a sensation of indisputability and serene contemplation, combined with subtle details of odd or eccentric, humoristic elements. With the use of appropriated materials which are borrowed from a day-to-day context, he presents everyday objects as well as references to texts, painting and architecture. Pompous writings and Utopian constructivist designs are juxtaposed with trivial objects. Categories are subtly reversed.
His works demonstrate how life extends beyond its own subjective limits and often tells a story about the effects of global cultural interaction over the early twenty-first century. It challenges the binaries we continually reconstruct between Self and Other, between our own ‘cannibal’ and ‘civilized’ selves.

Ένα πείραμα για την επίγνωση της κατάστασης και την πολιτιστική ιδιοκτησία. Η έκθεση διερευνά τη σχέση μεταξύ του μύθου και της αισθητικής-τρομοκρατίας.
